The commitment to make each Capstone Village resident feel secure and well cared for is seen in the continuum of care offered by The Sara Barger Health Center at Capstone Village. Acclaimed for its skilled staff, family-like environment and limit of 29 residents, The Sara Barger Health Center is Tuscaloosa’s gold standard for assisted living and specialized assistance for memory impairment.

Residents feel at home in thoughtfully designed one-bedroom apartments overlooking lovely courtyards. Each apartment features a private bathroom and a cozy sitting area for visiting family and friends. The homey atmosphere continues in the two cheerful dining rooms, where spouses are welcome to dine with residents and staff. The Sara Barger Health Center also offers rehabilitation therapy, fitness and social activities, transportation to the best medical care in the area, and shopping expeditions.

Qualified and compassionate caregivers respect the needs of each individual resident –- physical, emotional, social and spiritual -– with enthusiasm and a smile. All residents receive supportive assistance with daily tasks such as bathing and dressing, mobility, incontinence care, and medication administration.

An especially unique component of The Sara Barger Health Center is its alliance with the University of Alabama, which keeps it on the cutting edge of assisted living and specialized care. The University and its Medical Center serve as a storehouse of new research and information, as well as providing top nursing students and gerontology interns. Together, these powerful resources ensure that each and every resident of Capstone Village –- regardless of independence level –- is living to their fullest potential and experiencing optimal quality of life.

About Dr. Sara Barger

The Dean of UA’s Capstone College of Nursing, Dr. Sara Barger has been called, “One of the most valued leaders in nursing today.” An innovator in nursing education and a recipient of numerous honors and awards, she has also distinguished herself in bringing health care to rural areas across the south. “One of the things I’m proudest of is having spent half of my career in practice,” notes Dr. Barger. “That has made me broader as a dean.”Photo by Skip Baumhower

Dr. Barger, who grew up in a rural area herself, is inspired by the close sense of community that she observes in small town healthcare. "You really know your patients," she says. "You know their family. There’s a continuity there.” That same kind of close relationship prevails today between care providers and residents in the Capstone Village health center bearing Dr. Barger’s name.
